Oral surgery is an umbrella term for surgical treatments such as dental implants, wisdom teeth extractions and bone grafting. Dental implants, an excellent solution for missing teeth, are surgically placed tooth roots that hold dental crowns in place. A wisdom tooth extraction may be recommended if there isn't enough room in your mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth and they become impacted, partially erupted or infected. Bone grafting transfers bone from one part of the jaw to another, usually to accommodate a dental implant. While a general dentist can perform some oral surgery procedures, an oral surgeon is required for others.

Jaw Pain / TMJ

The temporal-mandibular joint connects your lower jaw to the base of your skull, and it’s main function is to open and close your mouth when you speak or eat. Sound simple? It is … when it’s working properly. Unfortunately, many issues can arise with the jaw joint, and along with these issues come various often-misdiagnosed symptoms. Facial pain and chronic headaches are the heralds of this chronic disorder.

You may also hear clicking, grinding, or popping sounds when you chew, speak, or yawn. Many things cause Temporal Mandibular Disorder (TMD), such as grinding or clenching your teeth, as well as a misalignment of the jaw joint itself, a fracture, arthritis, or abnormal tissue growth. Before we begin treatment for TMD, we must first determine where the problem lies. We begin with a thorough examination, medical and social history, and diagnostic imaging, but occasionally a CT scan or MRI is necessary. Once we have determined the cause, we can work with you to return proper function to your joint. If grinding or clenching is causing your TMD, a custom made mouthguard will help align your joint while you sleep, and anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants can help reduce the pain and swelling. For those who don’t find relief from these methods, Botox® injections can help the stop the muscles from overworking and bring relief. Successful Botox treatment can last for up to three months and reduces the need for daily medication. If you have unusual pain in your head or neck, please come speak with us.

Sleep Apnea

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) not only affects health and quality of life, but also severely affects a spouse or significant other’s life. Obstructive sleep apnea not only causes fatigue and severe daytime drowsiness, but many other problems such as poor memory, headaches and many other health problems. Oral appliance therapy is an alternative to CPAP. An oral appliance is a small plastic device that fits over the teeth, just like an orthodontic retainer or mouth guard. The appliance is worn in the mouth during sleep to prevent the soft tissue of the throat from collapsing and obstructing the airway. Oral appliance therapy is a quick and easy procedure that can dramatically change your quality of life and that of your spouse.
